  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 17 – Display Rules and Condition Editor Enhancement

With MicroStation Update 17 it is now easier to create and apply display rules and share your data. New tools and enhancements are introduced to streamline your workflows and let you export your data with display rules.

The new Apply Display Rule tool will let you find and apply a display rule to the active view (or all views)  without having to dig into the Display Styles dialog and settings.

Capability to Export with Display Rules to DWG, DXF, or DGN formats is added. This will create files of the above formats using the symbology applied by the active display rules.

Both, Apply Display Rule and Export with display rules are available as a technology preview in this update.

    Condition Editor Enhancements

You can now create display rules more effectively and with greater flexibility. The property picker in the condition editor has been improved, offering new capabilities and a better experience for creating rules, while at the same time reducing the number of rules needed in many cases.

    • Elements’ Classes are grouped into a list for easy access. You can view the available classes in a drop-down menu. These host classes contain one or more property types and will be available depending on the content of the file. For example, if the file has item types attached then the list will display the Item Types class.

    • The “show classes” button now makes it possible to see classes for the selected element only. Select the element and select this option in the condition editor to view classes specific to the element. You no longer have to search through a long list of properties to find the one needed.

    • The search field lets you quickly search for desired classes and properties.

    • The “like” operator is now available for many more conditions. The “Like” operator supports wildcards, which means you can now use a wildcard character when creating many more types of rules. An example is the creation of a rule, based on Level criteria: previously you had to create an individual rule for each level you wanted to include, while now you can create just one rule using an expression like *glass*, which will include all levels including “glass” in their names.
Enhancements available as Technology Preview Apply Display rules

If you use Display Rules in your designs often, Update 17 makes it easy for you to apply display rules to any View. You will see the new Apply Display Rule icon in the Presentation ribbon group under the View tab:

From the Apply Display Rule tool setting dialog, you can choose the display rule to be applied to the active View, open the Display Rules dialog,  or choose to the selected display rule to all views.

    Export with Display Rules

The Export with Display Rules option in the File > Export > Common File Types menu lets you export your data as currently displayed in the active View, including applied display rules, to DWG/DXF and DGN formats.

With this new capability, you can close the loop on data-driven workflows, as you can now not only change the presentation of your data on your screen but also export this view to DWG, for even smarter collaboration.

As an example, you can create rules for re-symbolizing your model in one click for different use cases and send customized drawings to different contractors, without having to create different versions of the same model and manually change levels or symbology.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 17 – Bringing vector data from PDFs into a DGN (Technology Preview)

Design data is often shared as PDF files in design projects. If your project workflows involve working with design data that is shared as PDF files, you may want to bring this design data into a DGN and modify it as needed.

PDF as a raster attachment was previously supported in MicroStation. In MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 17, there is a new option to import a PDF to get vector data from PDFs into MicroStation.

Importing a PDF provides the option to import vector primitives, raster and text data from 2D PDF file to DGN file. You can open, reference or import a PDF file in a DGN. Each page in the PDF displays as a separate model in the DGN.

    >>Opening a PDF:

    • You can open a single page or multipage PDF documents in MicroStation. The PDF will open with each page as a separate model in the DGN.
    • The vector elements in the PDF will display as design elements (lines, curves, arcs, circle, etc..)
    • Text elements will display as text
    • Any raster elements will appear as raster attachments in the model
    • The elements in the PDF after opening in MicroStation will open read-only and cannot be modified.

    >> Attaching a PDF as a Reference:

    • You can attach a PDF as a reference in a DGN using the Attach Reference dialog.

In the Model field select the desired page number to attach from the PDF (Single /Multipage)

    • The PDF is attached as a reference to the active model.
    • All vector elements in the PDF will display as design elements. These elements can be selected to view their properties but cannot be modified.
    • Text elements from the PDF will appear as Text
    • Raster elements from the PDF will appear as raster attachments
    • All content from the PDF will display as read-only in the model.

    >> Importing a PDF:

    • For PDFs with multiple pages. You can select the desired page to import using Options button
    • Vector elements from PDF file will display as design elements in the DGN (eg: Lines, Line Strings, Curves, Polygons, ect..)
    • Text elements will display as text in the DGN
    • You can select these elements, view their properties, and modify them as needed
    • Any raster elements imported from PDF will display as raster attachments in the DGN and cannot be modified
  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 17 – AEC Transform and improved UI for iTwin Attach workflows

The Attach iTwin tool in MicroStation is available as a part of the Collaboration tools, and lets you attach an iModel as a reference in a DGN. Tools in the Collaborate ribbon tab in MicroStation bring together collaboration, synchronization, and issue resolution tools for better coordination among team members.

In MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 17, Attach iTwin tool includes some improvements.

1)Search allows you to search for an iModel by name. Filter allows you to filter your search by Name, Owner, and Downloads State, and Ascending or Descending order.

    2) Back takes you back to the Attach iModel as Reference section of the dialog

3)Attach iModel as Reference dialogue has a new model-tree dialogue, that contain more controls and allow for greater flexibility while attaching iModels as reference.

You can check models you want to display (attach /detach), snap, locate and apply transparency.

    4) Filter lets you filter the list of models based on values you enter.

    5) When data in a model uses a Geographic Coordinate System, MicroStation can easily reference data that is also geographically aware into the model. While attaching an iModel, in MicroStation, if both the reference iModel and the active model have a GCS, the Attach iModel as Reference dialog enables the AEC transform option.

The AEC Transform option in the Attach iModel as Reference dialog, will perform an AEC Transformation to align the GCSs in the iModel and the active model during attachment.

Note: the AEC Transform option will be enabled only if the reference iModel and the active model have a GCS. If both or either of the model is missing GCS information, this option will not be enabled in the Attach iModel as reference dialog. If both the reference iModel and the active model have the same GCS then an AEC Transform is not needed.

With an AEC transform, MicroStation calculates the linear transformation to give the best approximation to the results. The approximation is acceptable for smaller-scale data, such as most man-made structures that occupy less than a square kilometer.

With the reference model and the active model GCSs aligned it will be easier to place and manipulate elements in a relative coordinate system.

Note: AEC Transform will also work for iModels with a GCS with Helmert transformation in the coordinate system.

    6) Allow Referencing the active model allows self-referencing of same model from iModel to the active model while attaching. This option is enabled if the active model is previously synchronized with the iModel.

    7) Update iModel Attachment is enabled when the attached iModel is updated in the iModelHub and updates the attached iModel for any changes made to it in the iModelHub.

(iModel before updating)                                                                     (iModel after changing , synchronizing and updating)

    8) There is a drop-down menu at the top right-hand side of the dialog which lists all the attached iModels.
