  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 15 – Export/Import Variables and Variations to and from Excel

Variables and Variations play an important role in parametric modeling. Now it is possible to import and export parametric variables and variations to Excel’s .xlsx file format, in addition to the previously supported .csv file format. This enhancement aims at making it easier to work with models that require a large number of variables and variations, allowing you to carry out the data entry or editing operations directly in Excel.

In the Variables dialog, select File > Import/Export, and in the window that opens browse to the location of the Excel file you wish to import data from or you wish to export information to.

To import data from an Excel file, from the Variables dialog navigate to the location of the Excel file (File > Import > Browse), select the file, and click Import. The variables and variations information from the .xlsx file will now be imported to the active DGN and will appear in the Variables dialog.

    communities.bentley.com/.../Import.mp4

To export to an Excel file, from the Variables dialog navigate to the location you wish to save the .xlsx file (File > Export> Browse), type a name for the file, and click Export. The variables and variations information from the Variables dialog will be saved in the newly created .xlsx file.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 15 – New Fields Available in Reports Dialog

The Properties section in the Reports dialog has a new field and filters available in Update 15. The Options field is newly added to the Included Items section. This field allows you to choose from ‘Include Used Classes’ and ‘Include All Classes’ options. The Options field is available for report definitions saved to or available in the active file.

The Item Types field has a new filter introduced for a better selection of item types.

When you select the corresponding drop-down button, the Item Types window opens.

In this window, you will now see an additional section called ‘Include these Item Types’ in addition to the ‘And these related items’ section.

If you select an item type from the Include These Item Types list, then only the selected item types will be included in the report results. If you select a related item from the Add these related items list, then you get the Toggle required related item button . If this button is turned on, then the item will only be included in the report results if it has the specified related item(s). If the button is off, all items will be included regardless of whether or not the related item(s) exist.

In the Add these related items list, you can also select indirect relationships. For example, say a text element resides in a model that resides in a DGN file. In this case, the DGN file can be selected as an indirectly related item of the element. In the drop-down list, the selection will be Element resides in Model > Model resides in Design File > Files.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 15 – (Public Technology Preview) Vue Rendering Dialog and Atmosphere Editor

We are pleased to announce a technology preview of E-on Software’s VUE Render Engine with MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 15. This is available as the new Vue Rendering dialog in MicroStation.

The VUE rendering engine uses Global Radiosity whereas Luxology uses Irradiance Caching and the render settings are different. For this technology preview, the VUE render settings are hardcoded in rendering presets. The VUE render engine supports Path Tracing which in addition to using all CPU cores it will use all GPUs found in your system that support OpenCL. For interior renders you should find that Path Tracing combined with either NVIDIA or Intel denoiser will provide the best results especially where the scene’s materials are Physically Based Materials (PBR).

Luxology’s environment lighting consists of Physical Sky, Gradients, and Image-based lighting. Vue on the other hand supports true atmospheres that are much more realistic than just Physical Sky and it also supports image-based lighting.

You can access the Vue Rendering dialog from the Rendering group in the Home tab of the Ribbon.

NOTE: VUE’s render engine requires a CPU that supports Advanced Vector Extensions AVX meaning produced in 2011 or later.

Click on the image to enlarge it

The VUE Render Dialog lets you choose the Rendering Method, Render Presets, Atmosphere, Light Setups, Tone Mapping Options, and more.

Click on the image to enlarge it

Clicking on the Render icon from the dialog will launch a VUE rendering using the settings you have chosen.  Clicking below the render icon will open a drop-down menu where you can choose Fast Preview Render  as an option. The Fast Preview uses lower quality settings and Ray Tracing to achieve faster render and is suitable for test renders.

This technical preview is a work in progress and all render settings are currently presets. A VUE render settings dialog will be available in future updates.

Watch our expert, Jerry Flynn's videos on VUE Relighting and MicroStation Non-Photorealistic Rendering for more information.

    Atmosphere Editor

One exciting improvement of using the VUE renderer vs. Luxology is in VUE’s ability to accurately render the atmosphere and includes support for traditional gradients and image-based environments.

The key to a successful exterior render is often the atmosphere it evokes. The scenes you render with VUE’s render engine are part of a world, that extends far beyond your scene. Imagine rendering a world with an atmosphere, with clouds, fog, haze, and real clouds, infinite ones, not just a backdrop picture of a sky.

You can create complex atmospheres from scratch using VUE. Any of the atmospheres created with VUE can be saved as an ATM file and opened with MicroStation’s Atmosphere Editor and used to render a scene with VUE inside MicroStation. One limitation with MicroStation’s Atmosphere Editor is that it will not allow for the creation of new cloud layers, if you load a preset atmosphere that already has a cloud layer you will be able to adjust the amount of Cloud cover.

MicroStation offers a list of predefined VUE atmospheres. Choosing one of them will let you start building your scene from a good basis. You will be able to fine-tune many atmospheric settings to improve the atmosphere of your renders. Atmospheres include settings for the sky, clouds, sun, quality of light, fog, and haze.

You can access the Atmosphere Editor dialog from within the Vue Rendering dialog by selecting .

Note: MicroStation currently only uses Photometric Spectral based Atmospheres, however other atmospheric models will be supported in future versions. Photometric Spectral is VUE’s hyper-realistic atmospheric model that accurately simulates the behavior of real-world atmospheres and lighting according to weather conditions. The appearance of the sky, sun, and clouds as well as the character of direct and ambient light are all affected by the delicate balance between the elements that constitute the atmosphere: air, dust, and water particles. The Photometric Spectral model provides its own set of controls that let you adjust each element’s density and height and rendering quality.

Below images are examples showing varying sizes of Sun corona:

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 15 – (Public Technology Preview) Parametric Components Dialog and Placement Points

Named Presentations and Perforators are advanced parametric tools that are useful while working with complex 3D geometries. Named Presentations allow you to display different symbols in different view contexts. Perforators let you add perforation or cutting properties to an element in a design, which adjust dynamically with the changes made to the element’s geometry. Update 15 unifies Named Presentations and Perforator tools along with the newly introduced Placement Points tool in a single dialog called Parametric Components.

This dialog is made available in the Parametric Components ribbon group under the Content tab.

Selecting any of the three tools available in this group will launch the Parametric Components dialog.

    communities.bentley.com/.../Access-PC-dialog.mp4

You can read more on Named Presentations and Perforators in previous blogs and product help.

    Placement Points

Add one or more placement points to parametric component using the Placement Points tool. This new tool is introduced in Update 15 to allow greater flexibility to users while placing parametric cells in the design. You can place multiple placement points and even add placement points outside of an element at the desired offset.

When you select the Add button ((+) icon), the Add Placement Points tool setting window opens.

Here you can choose a method to add placement points to the element. You can also add a placement point at a distance from the element using the “Place Point in Space” button .

You can assign distance constraints to the placement points and apply variations.

    communities.bentley.com/.../Video-1-placement-points.mp4

While placing the parametric cell in a design you can toggle between placement points using the ‘Alt’ key to choose the desired placement point.

    communities.bentley.com/.../Video-2_2D00_-place-cell.mp4

Once the cell is placed in a design the placement points are hidden, but they can be displayed by right-clicking on the component and selecting “Show Placement Point”. Likewise, to hide the placement points you can select “Hide Placement Points” from the right-click menu.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 15 - (Public Technology Preview) Expression Builder

You can now build your expressions easily and intuitively using the new Expression Builder dialog. We introduced Item Types Expressions in a recent MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update to allow our users to use calculated properties within Item types. Expressions were received very well but most of our users found them difficult to use, as the initial implementation was geared more towards programmers or more “techie” MicroStation users.

We wanted to make Item Types expressions appealing and usable for as many users as we could as they unleash a tremendous potential for a huge number of automation workflows so we developed a complete new Expression Builder dialog.

The new Expression builder will make the creation of an expression quicker and easier, from the selection of the right function or operator to picking the right property and validating the expression before rolling into production.

You can pick the desired functions from the available Function groups on the left-hand side of the dialog or selecting  in the toolbar.  displays the Function groups that are available for use, in a drop-down menu. You can also use Ctrl + Space instead of   . After selecting a function group you can select a property from the right-hand side section. You can use the  tool in the toolbar to concatenate two expressions to calculate a property. You can also use various Arithmetic, Comparison, Conditional and Logical operators from the “Select Operators” drop-down menu. The selected type of operators will display in the toolbar.

Once you have created an expression you can validate it by clicking on the Test button and you will be notified by a message whether the expression is valid or not.

    communities.bentley.com/.../Video-1-Expression-builder.mp4

The following video demonstrates an example of Concatenation where the result of two combined expressions is used to derive properties.

    communities.bentley.com/.../Video-2-Exp-Concat.mp4

We hope that with this new dialog you will find it easier to create and use expressions in many of your workflows. This will boost your productivity, reduce the risk of errors, and automate some of the tedious manual tasks that we all dread.
