  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 – (Technology Preview) iTwin Synchronizer

    MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 introduces iTwin Synchronizer as Technology Preview. iTwin Synchronizer enables you to synchronize or push your design changes from a DGN to an iModel in the iModelHub. These changes in the iModel are available for your team members, reviewers and project stake holders for viewing, analyzing and validating.

    To share files associated with a project with team members and stake holders, you only need to push your changes in the design file to an iModel using iTwin Synchronizer and then share a link to the iModel with them. The team members you share this link with will be able to view, examine and analyze the data stored in the iModel. In the iModelHub, design changes are recorded chronologically, making it easy to track what changes were synchronized, by whom and when.

    Advantages of Synchronizing Data:

    • You can continuously maintain a live digital twin of your asset(s) throughout its lifecycle.
    • You can view design data and properties in a web browser, without the need to install any desktop application.
    • You can review design changes and compare any versions to see the differences.
    • You can conduct continuous design reviews to identify and rectify issues while the project is in progress.
    • You can take advantage of several upcoming iTwin Services that operate on design data and provide useful insights, including cost considerations, about the progress of the project.

    Note: You must have the iTwin Synchronizer desktop application installed on your system to be able to use iTwin Synchronizer in MicroStation. Click here to download iTwin Synchronizer desktop application.

    iTwin Synchronizer in MicroStation leverages the iTwin Synchronizer desktop application which is a cloud-based design collaboration tool and supports design tools from Bentley, as well as Autodesk and others.

    Here is how it works:

  • Your project administrator registers a project, adds team members, and assigns roles.
  • You as a Team member will need to download iTwin Synchronizer and Bridges to your desktop computer. Project models and the timeline of changes will then be available for viewing on the iModelHub.
  • In MicroStation, you can access this tool from the ribbon:

    Drawing/Modeling > Utilties > iModelHub

    When you select iTwin Synchrinizer in the ribbon, the iTwin Synchronizer desktop application opens. Here you will see the ProjectWise project your DGN is associated with in the Projects drop down and you will see any Synchronizations that have been created for this project. You can select a Synchronization you want to push your changes to. You must be added to the project by your project admin to be able to synchronize data.

    Here’s some information on RBAC permissions that are required for you to:

    • Create a new Synchronization:
      Product Settings > Manage Settings
    • Publish a DGN to iModelHub:
      iModelHub > Modify iModel

    • Publish Reality data to ProjectWise ContextShare:
      ProjectWise ContextShare > Create

    • Create an iModel on the iModelHub:
      iModelHub > Create iModel

    (These roles and permissions can be managed by your project admin. You can read more on RBAC roles here.)

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 - Access V8i Task Theme from Quick Access Toolbar

    The V8i Task Theme introduced in Update 13 of MicroStation CONNECT Edition was a welcome change for users who have recently migrated to the CONNECT Edition from V8i. The V8i task theme eases the process of transitioning to the new CONNECT interface by providing a familiar layout of tools for easy access.

    In Update 14 the V8i Task option has been added to the Quick Access Toolbar for quicker easier access. There is no need to set any configuration variable (MS_TASKNAVIGATION_CONFIGURATION) or preference, to enable the V8i Theme.

    You can now access the V8i Task theme and its various styles from the V8i button next to the Workflow drop-down menu in the Quick Access Toolbar. From the drop-down menu, you can choose Ribbon, Dialog, Toolbox or ComboBox style to display the V8i tools.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 – Choose a Mode to Offset Solid Edges

    The Offset Solid Edges tool now offers greater flexibility to users by allowing you to choose a specific Mode to offset solid edges while imprinting geometry on a solid. You can now choose between Original and Round options in the Mode field in the Offset Solid Edges tool setting window:

    Modeling > Solids > Features > Imprint

  • Select the solid.
  • Choose a method to offset.
  • Optionally choose distance of offset.
  • Select Mode of offset (Round is effective only when method is set to Loop).
  • Select the solid.
  • Identify the planar face of the solid on which you wish to imprint.
  • Place data point to accept the offset.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 - Create a Non-Orthogonal Cut in a Solid

    You can now create a non-orthogonal cut in a solid using AccuDraw. Earlier you could only create a cut in a direction orthogonal to the solid. You can now manipulate the direction of the cut using the handles to get the desired result.

    Here’s how you can do this:

  • Select the Cut solids with Curves tool (Modeling > Solids > Features).
  • In the tool settings select the desired values for Cut Method, Cut Direction, Cut Mode, Cut Depth and Profile.
  • Select the solid to cut
  • Select the cutting profile element.
  • Click and drag the Green arrow in the desired direction using AccuDraw to adjust the cut direction.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 - Apply 2D Constraints to Mid-point of Elements

    MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 introduces support for mid-point in its 2D constraint tools.

    Applying constraints is an integral part of any parametric design. We are constantly striving to make parametric modeling tools better and ease users’ parametric workflows. In Update 14 you can now directly constrain a point to the mid-point of a line, edge or arc, without the need to create a dimension constraint or an expression-driven variable.

    An end point or mid-point can be constrained to the mid/end points of another geometry or to any other available constraining point, such as the center of an ellipse or circle.

    This enhancement affects the following 2D constraint tools:

    • 2D Coincident
    • 2D fixed
    • 2D Concentric
    • 2D Distance

  • Performance Enhancement in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 -DWG File Opening Time Follow up

    Much like the previous blog, in this blog, you will find results of a comparative study conducted to analyze the file open time for a DWG file between MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 13 and Update 14. We came up with enhancements in the previous update and narrowed down a finer scale for users to analyze the File Open time for a DWG File. The DWG File open Time has shown constructive improvement, where the machine has multiple processors, the performance of the .dwg file open time has drastically improved in Update 14.

    The test results are assembled using different variables, based on multiple core processors. It was clearly observed that MicroStation Update 14 draws better results as compared to Update 13

    The file opening time for a DWG file in Update 13 was trending at an average of 240 seconds and now with Update 14, it has come down to 60 seconds.

    The general perspective of this graph is to show the overlapping results between MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 13 and Update 14. However, in the Building model dataset, the graph substantially increases in favor of Update 14 with an average of 8.5 seconds in contrast to 170 for the same.

    These tests were performed specifically for time required to open a DWG File in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 13 and in Update 14. With improved changes in the current update, we have a lot more in store for the next Update.     Property dialogs key feature is to review or modify the properties of an element, such as its geometry. With the recent development in the Element Properties Dialog, we fetched plenty properties. Now we are optimizing them for better performance. Users will now experience higher productivity when using larger datasets with maximum number of elements. Much like the previous blog, in this blog also, you will find a comparative study conducted to analyze the time taken to load the properties dialog with multiple elements.

    The test data has been accumulated based on machines with multiple processors and an average of the same has been drawn to run the study. MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 has shown substantial hike in the graph as compared to Update 13.

    The load time for Properties Dialog in Update 13 was trending at an average of 240 seconds and now with Update 14, it has come down to 60 seconds.

    Cleanup actions are performed via the Design File Cleanup dialog. With this update, the performance of the Design File clean-up has improved, making the user experience easier and less time-consuming. The clean-up actions can be performed for Duplicate, Overlapping and Gap in the elements.

    The Work Page consists of two major components, WorkSpace and WorkSet. The smooth transition from selecting the WorkSpace and delving down to the WorkSet has now become quick to access with MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14. There are two methods of loading the WorkSet. One within the application and one by browsing to your desired file path. In the previous update, the time taken to load the WorkSet within the WorkSpace was stirring at a slower pace as compared to Update 14.

    SOLIDS IMPROVEMENT

    Modify solids feature is used to modify a parametric solid of feature by editing the parameters used to create it. When changes are made, the solid or feature is regenerated to reflect the new values. In the previous update, the time taken to load all solids with multiple features was comparatively higher than Update 14. Refer to the graph below. This improvement is also applicable for any new features created on specific Parametric Solid.

     

    STEP IMPORT

    STEP file (*.stp) is a file format interactively used in 3D files for MicroStation. With MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14, the time taken to import a STEP (.stp) file has reduced compared to Update 13.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 - Disable Thumbnail Preview for files on the Work Page

    Ensuring better user experience has been a prime focus for MicroStation CONNECT Edition with every update. In Update 14, we have tried to make accessing backstage smoother and faster by giving you the choice to disable the thumbnail preview for the recently opened files.

    When you launch MicroStation, the Work Page displays the list of recently opened files in the Thumbnail preview Mode.

     

    You can disable this by selecting the checkbox for Hide Thumbnail View in the Preference Dialog – Look and Feel Category available in the User Preferences. (Settings>User>Preference>Look and Feel>Hide Thumbnail View) these are settings that control how the product operates. Once you’ve done the same, re-launch MicroStation to see the recently opened files displayed in list mode and the icon for Thumbnail and List Mode disabled.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 - Ability to Add or Remove an Element to Named Presentation(s) in the Properties Dialog

    When working with 3D models, some geometric components need to display different symbols in different view contexts, and simple projections may not be sufficient. The Named Presentations feature allows you to do so and with MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14, you can now control the participation of an element in the Named Presentation from the Properties dialog. You can set the value to True or False in the Named Presentation section of the Properties dialog to add or remove a selected element from Named Presentation.

    Note: You can set and change the participation of an element to Named Presentation from the Properties dialog only if both the below mentioned conditions are satisfied for the active model’s properties.

    • “Cell Type” is set to “Parametric”
    • Can be placed as “Cell” is set to “True”

    With the introduction of the Help tab the access to help from the Ribbon was moved out from the Ribbon to the Help tab, in the previous update. In MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14, the help icon is reintroduced in the top right section of the ribbon for one-click access to Help.

    Click on  to access help directly from the ribbon. By clicking on this icon, you will be redirected to MicroStation Help online or offline based on your preferences in Settings.

  • New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14 - Item Types integrated in (Technology Preview) Text Favorites Manager

    Text Favorite Manager in MicroStation CONNECT Edition hosts a variety of element property types to enable reusable property-driven annotations.  The text favorites created in the Text Favorite Manager can contain placeholder fields as well as fields with property values. You can now associate an Item type in the Field Type while creating or managing a text favorite in the Text Favorite Manager dialog. You can select the Item Type and the Item Type property definition available in the Text Favorite Manager Dialog.

    Once you select the Item Type and the Item Type Property Definition, they will be available in the Text Editor.

    This enhancement in the Text Favorite Manger dialog will allow you to work with greater flexibility and let you work with detailed information about the elements in your design.
